Remembering the Holocaust's other victims

Yom, the Hebrew word for day, and hoshoa, the word for remembrance, make up the name of the most modern Jewish observance in our history. The Day of Remembrance is the memorial to the six million Jews who died under the Nazi regime in the Holocaust. Each year on the day in the Hebrew calendar marking the anniversary of the uprising of the Warsaw Ghetto, Jews around the world gather to commemorate the saddest occurrence, not only in modern history, but in the entire history of the world.

Gays, lesbians, gypsies, political dissidents and others also died. Anyone who was not pure white ("Aryan") or who disagreed with the thinking of the Third Reich was subjected to horrors that we cannot imagine, usually resulting in death.

As a group, the Jews suffered the most. However, no one mourns the gays or lesbians. No one mourns all the others who died. Little is written about them. No homeland has been established for them, no repatria-

Bidding was hectic at times, as a little friendly competition heated up. I'm sure you all got exactly what you wanted as you put in your own bids.

We of the Auction Committee would like to thank everyone who attended the auction. Your generous bids will be put to good use within our community. Special thanks also go out to everyone who donated to the auction; from the generous businesses and professional services we

tion for their losses. They are just gone and forgotten.

Not so at Chevrei Tikva. Five years ago, we began commemorating this event on the Friday evening closest to Yom Hoshoa. It is almost imperative that, as a gay and lesbian syngogue, we do not ignore the Jews and the gays who are not with us anymore.

Five years ago, the history of gay men and the Holocaust was discussed at this service. The few books written exclusively about this subject mention that only six lesbians have been documented as having perished at this time. One of our members brought up the fact that lesbians were forced into prostitution along with heterosexual women. This year we will delve further into the topic of women and the Holocaust.

Chevrei Tikva will observe Yom Hoshoa on Friday, April 5, at 8:30 p.m. as part of our regular Shabbat service at the Unitarian Society at 2728 Lancashire Road in Cleveland Heights. Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend.

Although this is a serious event, Jews will still be Jews! Good food is part of our heritage. An Oneg (refreshments) will follow services.

Another event concerning women will take place on Tuesday evening, April 24. Rabbi Rosette Baron Haim will speak on women in Judaism.

Please call 932-5551 for locations, times and any other Chevrei Tikva information.

GAY PEOPLE'S CHRONICLE

April, 1991 received from our community, to the people within the church who gave their time to ensure our success. It was good to see such support from our community. Thank you all.

Another form of support freely given lately was the support given to a sister member of the church, at the passing away of her brother, another member of the church. Danny is survived by a companion, and a large group of family and friends. His sister and her companion, also member of the church, received an overwhelming show of support from the many different aspects of our community.

The memorial service held at the church was one of the most beautiful I've ever seen anywhere. Heartfelt sympathies go out to all of his surviving loved ones.

Another wish of sympathy goes out it a dear friend, Jim, who lost a man who was like a father to him most of his life. Remember, your "father" is at peace in Heaven, and you have some very special friends here that will do whatever it takes to help you through your time of mourning. We love you.

After that exhausting Auction you'd think Emmanuel would settle down for a little while. Not so! On March 30, Emmanuel will be combining the talents of its choir with those of a fellow gay and lesbian church from Akron to perform a musical pageant for your enjoyment.

This Easter pageant will follow the last

few days of Jesus Christ up to the resurrection from the stone tomb. Based on the rehersals alone, this joint venture is sure to reach out to evyone in the audience. Anyone who believes in Christ and the Resurrection will want to see this very detailed account the churches are working on for you.

If you don't know the whole story, this would be an excellent introduction. The story is put to music, with some of the most powerful and emotionally packed songs around. When the singer playing Jesus sings "I'll Rise Again," there won't be a dry eye in the auditorium. We'll be looking for you there. Curtain time is 7:00 p.m. sharp.

Finally, don't forget the upcoming Spring Homecoming Dance. It will be held on April 6, beginning at 8:00 p.m. There will be dancing, munchies, a plenty of drink in an alcohol-free environment. A great time will be had by all who attend.

As I close, let's take time to give thanks for a quick end to the war, with the minimal casualties we had. It could have been much worse. We should all be ecstatic to see so many returning home already. Maybe one day, all men and women will be home where they belong. For any information about the upcoming events, please call the church phone at 651-0129. Be seeing you there. Until next month, peace and God bless.
